I'm Garon and I am passionate about writing clean, semantic code. I'm available for hire in the web/software development sector. When I'm not sat in front of my laptop, I can be found coaching a junior football team, this is both challenging and rewarding. I love spending time with my family too.
If I were to describe myself in code (just for fun!) it might look a bit like this...
I started my journey by teaching myself Html, CSS and a small amount of JavaScript. I soon started building some bespoke Wordpress themes including a charity run website after which I was aproached by a software developer to upgrade an existing site which had become very outdated. It was very challenging but gave me some real world experience and affirmed my desire to seek employment as a developer.
I decided to take my abilities to the next level and invested in a coding bootcamp. After much research I choose The Jump Digital School. The syllabus is very comprehensive and teaches the latest tech. I learnt so much during the course and I'm now ready to work full time in the industry.
Sqod is a proof of concept project that shows my knowledge and understanding of React. It is essentially a football themed web app that allows users to sign up as a Manager of a team or as a parent. Managers can create teams, fixtures and approve or unapprove players. Parents can add children, view their childs approved/not approved status and view upcoming fixtures.
Whilst this was an extremely challenging project, it helped me appreciate just how awesome frontend frameworks like react really are and also helped solidify my JavaScript knowledge.
Backend API for Sqod App. This project uses Node, Express and SQL. I further enhanced my knowledge by building out the backend and as a result, now have a solid understanding of how the front and backend work together. Learning how to query data with SQL was interesting and it was great to see how to work properly with databases.
This was one of the homework tasks from the The Jump Digital School JavaScript module. The brief was to create a simple weather application that gets data from an api and manipulates the DOM using vanilla javascript to display the data on the screen.
The app uses geolocation to get a users current location and displays the weather for where they are. There is an input box where a user can search for a place; this then returns the weather for the location searched. The app gives the user the current weather, the days forecast in 3 hourly intervals and also a daily forecast for the following 5 days. Other features include the background changing colour depending on the current weather conditions.
This was my first project built with React. It's just a small, but fun, project that displays and filters character quotes from the Simpsons. The data comes from a third party api.
This was my final piece of homework from The Jump Digital School CSS module on their full stack developer bootcamp course.
The brief was to recreate an existing homepage, which was to be as true to the original as possible. For this project I choose NOWNESS.com. The reason for my choice was that I felt it had a lot of different features that would further challenge my CSS thinking, knowledge and skills.
A friend of a friend, who has his own software development company, asked if I would be willing to help him out on a project. After agreeing to work on the home page for RFGS, I ended up completely re-styling the whole site as well as upgrading old technologies (e.g. Bootstrap 2 to Bootstrap 4 and also Wordpress/Gutenburg). This was a steep learning curve as I had never been part of something so big. I was also asked to style the site in SCSS, which I had no previous experience of, so I had to learn on the fly. It was so could good to get some real world experience working with a full time software developer.
